BTW: Is there a relationship between Oscilmet and the word I can't spell that begins with a big B and where Neil Bennet works?

No, Oscilmet is owned by Mike Fewings who started this forum with Tim.
He sells the Oscilmet services to various businesses and government departments.
The Bureau form a huge part of the info used so they may have a good agreement?

For the record, that is predominantly the service that this forum owes its existence to. We share the same server and to the best of my knowledge, it is powered by predominantly renewable energy.

Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology
Western Australia

TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING
for Damaging Winds, Large Hail and Heavy Rainfall
For people in parts of WA in the area bounded by Dalwallinu to Paynes Find to
Merredin to Corrigin to Northam to Dalwallinu.

The warning for people in the area bounded by Morawa to Yalgoo to Paynes Find to
Dalwallinu to Northam to Corrigin to Dwellingup to Gingin to Morawa has been
CANCELLED.
Issued at 6:05 pm on Wednesday 4 January 2012

WEATHER SITUATION

A surface trough lies across the western Central Wheatbelt. People are advised
that thunderstorms in the warning area could be severe. Storms may be
accompanied by VERY HEAVY RAINFALL conducive to FLASH FLOODING, LARGE HAIL and
DAMAGING WINDS that could result in DAMAGE TO HOMES AND PROPERTY IN LOCALISED
AREAS.

At 6:00pm radar showed an area of potentially severe thunderstorms in the
warning area which are moving to the south east. Conditions are beginning to
ease.

The overall weather pattern is not unusual for this time of year, but these
thunderstorms may
produce severe weather in localised areas.

WHAT TO DO
FESA State Emergency Service [SES] advises people to secure loose items, move
vehicles under cover and stay inside away from windows. If there is lightning
unplug electrical appliances and avoid using landline telephones. If caught
outside find shelter away from trees, powerlines, storm water drains and
streams. If driving through heavy rain slow down and turn your lights on or if
visibility becomes low pull over and park until it passes. For SES assistance
call 132 500. For more safety tips visit www.fesa.wa.gov.au

The next warning will be issued by 9:00 pm Wednesday.

Fu, thanks. Please be assured that I'm not complaining and am eternally grateful to MikeF for the hosting that he up plies at zero cost to us, the WAWG users (sounds of orchestral music in the background).

Seriously though, I was simply curious why the BOM use the Ocilmet loop when, surely, they could do it themselves in a heart beat. However, curiosity killed the cat ;-)

That's every darn photo I took today. LOL. I'm too tired and drained to go through them, so there will be a lot of similar pictures. I'll save the deleting/editing for another day. :)

Maybe because it would be more cost effective for them to outsource the service? Use our server instead?
They don't have the best facilities with the shoe string budgets they receive.

I will work on a an answer for you :)

I don't wish to confuse, just offer a plausible answer;
Simon, i am going to guess you made the assumption that the BOM use Oscilmnet radar loop since the bom only loops three images where as OSC offers a greater variety.
If this is the case, tis a reasonable assumption.
Given the bom operate the radar network, i am almost 100% certain that bom would also maintain the servers that host the image deployment. I just can't see a critical function as this being done by anyone but them.

I won't go into too much specifics, but my presumption is that osc show thier own archive of the bom images. I won't go any further in detail than this.
So that then begs the question, if bom operate the radar and the image deployment, why the osc site is so superior.
It is likely that the bom only provide a short loop for the following reasons:
As Fu correctly mentioned, mainly budgetary. Providing more images is more bandwidth, which is more cost. Osc is used by limited parties. The number of hits to the public radar network would be massive, and every image costs a bit of data, and data is money. The best way to limit this is to limit the loop.
It may also come down to management costs associated with maintaing and presenting the bank of files, and the server workload that would be associated with allowing that volume of users to interact with a greater loop.
I would suspect that bom have everything on archive but just present a limited snapshot of current activity. The other likely reason is practicality. The bom probably made a decision at some stage, in public interest, to offer limited info, so that it is relevant and easy to interpret. You check the radar, and get the latest images, nice and easy. It is possible that OSC actually host the entire radar network and i have it wrong, but for security reasons i doubt this would be the case.

I greatly commend the osc efforts for providing the extended loops to us ; and this is just how i presume it to work.

I have the honour of owning the oldest house in the town centre... the wood/timber part is aged 127yrs! I like my sparky new roof. :)

We had to destroy most of this southern side of the house to lay a new septic and leech fields, haven't got around to landscaping it yet. I've so far put it into the too hard basket. I'll wait until summer is over then decide. I'm thinking a pool or outdoor area with spa!

Yes, but I am rather disappointed that Ch9 didn't credit them at all - I counted at least 4 of Marie's.

Candice, can you comment on the policy? I wouldn't let any of my pics be used without either personal or WAWG credits present. The media are getting these for free and they have value, the least that they can do is give either personal or group exposure. I know Candice, and others, do via Twitter, but this is different.

It depends on the producer of the day. We generally don't credit unless specifically asked to, as some people (majority even) prefer to remain anonymous. We ALWAYS will via Facebook and Twitter (unless asked not to), but if you'd like a credit, just ask. 99 per cent of the time we'll say yes. :D

Candice, many thanks for responding (it is great that you interact here, I wish we had tools like this back in my WASES days) and for explaining. I hadn't thought of the anonymity aspect!
