As usual when the east gets the storms, they get the big news stories, but pretty severe by the looks on news this morning, and a couple of tragic fatalities due to fallen tree's, I will get what for from suppliers in SA, I told them we were sending them some rain, forgot to mention the wind though :? but they will still be fairly happy apparently it was dry as a dead dingo's donger in SA til now

Vin I will guarantee the bet is correct Tim wouldn't let me get away with it that easy, and it was an easy statement to make with a 88mm avg with the promise of so much rain, but still it was a good call made so long out, if I do say so myself................and I do

This could be way off, but for the more curious amongst you, is there any correlation between this - http://www.swellnet.com.au/dispatch.php ... 120609.php - and the low covered by this thread?

Both events were a couple of weeks apart from each other, but I thought it was interesting that we got such a deep low pressure system affecting our area talked about in this thread, and a unique swell event beforehand that was generated by another 'monster' low.

Are they related in any way? Any thoughts?

Not so mad - in the latest New Scientist magazine (27th June 2009) there is an article about Walter Munk, who pioneered wave and swell predictions to help during WWII. In this it mentions how big storms in the Indian Ocean can produce monster swells that travel around the bottom of New Zealand then all the way up to California! I guess this was one of those kind of storms.

I remember in a tute at uni we were discussing the large swell we were having at the time and the fact that a large storm south east of South Africa was producing it.
